On the edge of the Central Business District, Fatboy Izakaya’s playful art style, inspired by Japanese pop culture, has made a name for itself with nearby professionals cooling off from a day’s work and nightlife-hungry tourists and socialites.
Cool tiles, stone edging and wood panelling line the space, which hosts an open kitchen, a stunning terrace and an intimate nightlife space full of futuristic charm.
This creates an experience like no other, but Fatboy Izakaya isn’t only about sensational food, premier Japanese cocktails and funky aesthetics; it’s about exceptional, out-of-this-world sound.
Everyone loves our food, but what really sets us apart is how we blend a top-tier dining experience with the party spirit Bangkok is known for. Fatboy Izakaya, or FBI, as our regulars have come to call us, has DJs pumping music out daily in our ‘loud and proud’ space. For those who want a calmer experience, there’s the terrace with background music and plenty of space to chat.
Music is an intrinsic part of our venue’s character, so we decided to invest in Void Acoustics to offer our customers the very best experience.
Bringing the Bass and Vibe
Thailand has fast become a Void hotspot, and like many Southeast Asian establishments, this was the restaurant’s first experience of Void’s capabilities.
Installer Never2Late Limited, closely supported by Aura Visual, Void’s official distributor for Thailand and Vietnam, leaned on the company’s experience in the region’s luxury hospitality industry to guide the Fatboy Izakaya team through its Void journey.
Void’s system had to handle both subtle background music and energetic DJ performances, so we knew this would be tricky. Turning a restaurant into a nightclub at any moment is no mean feat, nor is turning up the volume without drowning out guests. It took a lot of creativity.
Our main challenge was fitting the speakers into the existing interior design without compromising on budget. Despite Void’s iconic designs, the venue was conscious of drawing too much attention to the speakers. Fortunately, Void’s iconic red colour fitted perfectly with the interiors, as this shade was already in the venue. We strategically placed the speakers between the wooden beams without compromising sound direction and dispersion.
We needed to align the sound with the sophisticated lighting system to sync with the music. Being a DJ, I know how this can make or break a night. Once we figured this out, the payoff was great. I must add that the support from Void HQ has been amazing. It’s been a real team effort.

More Music, More Money
Since installing Void, Fatboy Izakaya has created the ideal environment for people to socialise comfortably until they’re ready to join the fun. When they are, it’s party time.
In Bangkok’s hyper-competitive nightlife scene, customer retention is everything and keeping an audience entertained throughout the night is challenging. There are always other venues beckoning people in with another location just around the corner.
For Fatboy Izakaya, investing in its sound system has translated into revenue, as when people keep enjoying themselves, the drinks and Thai Baht keep flowing.
This is music to the ears of the passionate team responsible for Fatboy Izakaya’s iconic vibe.
The first time I heard the speakers was during our opening. I loved how the deep bass rattled the venue, and the sound quality has always been top-notch.
Stepping up our game was important to our shareholders, and getting people dancing is all that matters to our staff. We want people to have a great time every night, and Void has done just that.
